If you’re looking for a different Australian experience, then this is it!  Explore the Australian outback in style.  Starting in Darwin discover the city and beaches before taking off on an outback floatplane, airboat and cruise adventure with wildlife encounters, fishing and wetlands exploration.  Your outback adventure continues at Bullo River Station a half a million-acre working station near Kununurra.  Here you can get involved in the day to day activities on the station or enjoy hiking, fishing, and other activities on the property.  Boarding The Ghan Expedition for a luxury train journey you’ll travel from Darwin to Adelaide stopping at Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy for off train excursions over a 4 day, 3 night trip. From Adelaide explore the Barossa Valley one of Australia’s premier wine regions and Kangaroo island famous for both its stunning scenery and wildlife opportunities, and gourmet food and wine. 

DAY BY DAY:

Day 1:   Arrive in Darwin, transfer from the airport to your accommodation.  The rest of the day is at leisure.  (2 nights Darwin)

 

Day 2:  Explore Darwin city this morning at your leisure.   This afternoon you’re off on an outback floatplane adventure.       This is an action packed half day adventure designed to show the Northern Territory at its best. With airboats, floatplanes and cruise vessels, this tour has it all. Begin with a scenic flight complete with a spectacular floatplane landing on the waters of Sweets Lagoon where your once in a lifetime adventure unfolds. You can experience the amazing wildlife and scenery iconic to the Northern Territory, getting up close and personal with all the big names; crocs, buffalo, wild boars, barramundi, turtles and extensive birdlife. Try your hand at fishing for Barramundi and swimming in a crocodile-safe enclosure.

 

Day 3:  Today you leave Darwin for Kununurra.  Transfer to the airport for your flight to Kununurra where you will be transferred to Bullo River Station.  Here you will experience an authentic cattle station experience.  The working station has 4000 Brahman-cross herd across half a million acres.  (3 nights Bullo River Station)

 

Day 4:    You’re spending your time at Bullo River Station today.  You can choose your experience.  You can get involved in the daily running chores by getting out on the station in four-wheel drives, all-terrain vehicles or even on horseback. Activities include bore checks, lick runs and cattle yard work. There are poddy calves to be fed and muster training to do. Or take a farm tour to learn about everything we do. If you prefer you can spend the day exploring stunning landscapes, waterfalls, swimming in remote waterholes, barramundi fishing and discovering Aboriginal rock art and wildlife.  You can also explore the landscape by helicopter for a birds eye view of this magnificent station.  You’ll find the waterholes, billabongs and creeks teeming with wildlife and plenty of opportunities for hiking on the well worn trails. Guided hiking expeditions are available.

 

Day 5:  Spend the day at Bullo River Station enjoying the working farm activities or available activities.

 

Day 6:  You’re heading back to Darwin today.  Transfer to Kununurra for your flight to Darwin.  Transfer to your accommodation.  This evening you get to relax and enjoy a magnificent Darwin sunset and boutique dining experience on board a traditional fishing ketch while cruising Darwin Harbour.  Dinner is a seafood and barbeque banquet. (1 night Darwin)

 

Day 7:  You head off on your Ghan Expedition train journey through the heart of Australia today taking you from Darwin to Adelaide a 4 day, 3 night adventure.  Enjoy an all inclusive dining experience onboard and off train experiences in Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy. Your journey begins with a morning departure from Darwin. Once you’re settled into your private cabin, mingle with fellow travelers or sample the exceptional food, wine, and service onboard.  When it’s time for lunch, savor the regionally-inspired menu accompanied by a selection of all-inclusive wines and beverages, before an early afternoon arrival at the Top End township of Katherine. Enjoy a relaxing cruise through Nitmiluk Gorge’s ancient natural wonders and exploring the region’s rich Indigenous culture. Enjoy dinner as the sun sets over the outback, then back in your cabin you’ll find your bed turned down. Fall asleep as the train rolls soothingly onwards. (3 nights The Ghan Expedition)

 

Day 8:  After your first night on The Ghan, you’ll be greeted by a morning view of the spectacular Red Centre. A full day of excursions awaits you in the outback town of Alice Springs. An optional upgrade is a scenic flight to Uluru, returning in time to meet the rest of your fellow guests at a spectacular barbeque dinner under a million stars at the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station.

 

Day 9:  From your morning stop at the outback outpost of Manguri, you’ll venture into the weird and wonderful opal mining township of Coober Pedy, where more than half of the residents live underground. Here, you’ll enjoy a day of discovery, and a gourmet lunch in the most unique of locations: underground. Dinner is served back on the train where you can enjoy a nightcap as your journey continues.

 

Day 10:  From your cabin window this morning you’ll see a dramatic change in landscape, as the rich ochre tones of the outback make way for the green fields of South Australia. Enjoy a leisurely brunch as you pass through the majestic Flinders Ranges and prepare for your mid-morning arrival into Adelaide, completing one of the world’s great travel experiences.  Transfer to your accommodation. (2 nights Adelaide).

Day 11:  You’ll be picked up from your Adelaide accommodation and driven to the renowned Barossa wine region.  Your tour includes a brilliant showcase of the beautiful and historic Barossa Valley. Highlights include the amazing Whispering Wall, hidden deep in the Adelaide Hills, personally hosted wine tastings at the iconic Chateau Yaldara, Peter Lehmann, Langmeil and Lindsay Wine Estate and a walk alongside the oldest known Shiraz vineyard in the world. There is plenty of time to enjoy the picture-perfect scenery, unique culture and remarkable heritage of this world famous wine region. A lunch platter is included of the best Barossa meats, cheeses, olives, vegetables and freshly baked bread. Return to your accommodation to relax for the rest of the afternoon.

 

Day 12:   You’re heading to Kangaroo Island today.  An early morning pick up from your Adelaide Accommodation will take you to the SeaLink ferry for the 45 minute cruise to Kangaroo Island to meet your tour guide.  You have a full day Kangaroo Island wildlife discover tour. Your tour begins with an introduction to the island. Tour through several island habitats and see wildlife in its natural environment. Keep an eye out for echidnas, wallabies, reptiles and wildflowers, and the many species of birds. At Seal Bay your guide will escort you on a memorable walk along the beach. Walk among the sea lions as they bask on the beach or among the sand dunes after their extensive fishing expedition. Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch with wine. After lunch enjoy a pleasant bushwalk or stroll along the beach. Travel through the island's interior keeping an eye out for koalas and echidnas. Explore the beaches of the north coast and take a bushwalk. Later in the afternoon as the day draws to a close, see the kangaroos and wallabies leave the safety of the bush to begin grazing on the open pastures. (1 night Kangaroo Island).

Day 13:  Kangaroo Island is also famous for its food and wine.  Today you get to experience this for yourself.  On your tour see the busy Ligurian Bees (originally imported from Italy) produce their amazing-tasting honey at Clifford's Honey, experience some Emu Ridge Eucalytpus Oil and see how the oil is distilled, spend an hour strolling through the township of Kingscote and also have lunch, enjoy some Bay of Shoals wine and a cheese platter, watch a sheep being milked at Island Pure Sheep Dairy and taste their mild cheese, taste the Australian Award Winning Gin 'Old Tom' at Kangaroo Island Spirits.  Finish your tour with a visit to Island Beehive before your transfer to the Sealink Terminal for your cruise back to Adelaide. (1 night Adelaide)

Day 14:  Transfer to the airport for your journey home.

To travel to Australia you will need a US passport valid for at least 6 months and we can process an ETA Visa for free for US Citizens.  We will need a copy of your Photo Page of your Passport.  Nationalities of any other countries please enquire with your agent to see if you are eligible for a free ETA Visa or if you need to apply for a Visitor Visa.

To travel to New Zealand you will need a US passport valid for at least 6 months and an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority. More information on the NZeTA application requirements and process can be found on our FAQ page here.

All of the sample itineraries on this website do not include airfares as the airfare price changes daily and to ensure you get the best possible price we will work with the best airfares at the time.  If you happen to buy your airfare first and then need a package to fit it, we can certainly help with that as well, just let us know.

 

As an idea for a 2-week vacation to Australia or New Zealand we recommend a budget of around $8,000-10,000 (including economy airfare), this would be for a 4 star and above itinerary, a little cheaper if we did more moderate accommodations.
