ABOUT MOUNT EGMONT

At the heart of Mount Egmont National Park is a 2,518m (8,261 ft), beautifully symmetrical dormant volcano with two names: Taranaki, the original Maori name, and Egmont, the name given by Captain Cook in 1770. It was formed by numerous eruptions over 12,000 years most recently about 350 years ago. Experts believe another may be due any time. The mountain vegetation is called 'goblin forest' due to its diminutive appearance at higher altitudes.

There are 140km (87 miles) of walks in the park, ranging from 30 minutes to four days. Many people have lost their lives here: in winter the slopes are covered in snow and ice, so climbing boots, crampons and an ice axe are essential. Even in summer crampons are advised on the summit. Visitor offices here and in New Plymouth can advise on routes, hut stays and weather.
