ABOUT ADELAIDE
Adelaide was laid out in a square mile grid of wide streets with gracious colonial architecture by Colonel Light in 1836. He created a compact inner city for easy walking and surrounded it with 930 hectares of parklands with bicycle and walking trails, sports grounds for cricket, Aussie Rules football, golf, international horse trials and picnicking on the grassy banks of the meandering Torrens River. It has an active cultural lifestyle with many galleries, museums, churches, sidewalk cafes, cosy pubs and elegant restaurants. Tandanya, a multi-arts Aboriginal Cultural Centre, features galleries, performance areas, an excellent gift shop and a cafe serving native cuisine.

Every second year in March it stages the Adelaide Festival of Arts and Fringe Festival which attracts international and Australian artists and performers. The central markets feature 48 cultures in a unique atmosphere of noise, colour, aromas, tastes and lively banter that has survived 125 years. The main shopping precinct is Rundle Mall with department stores, boutiques, specialty shops and malls but suburban shopping precincts such as King William Road are also popular and fashionable. The 1920s Adelaide railway station is now an attractive casino and a historic tram still trundles out to the magnificent Glenelg beach with its own lively shops, restaurants and grand hotel. For animal lovers there is the Adelaide Zoo and Cleland Wildlife Park which features native birds and animals including koalas and kangaroos.

Adelaide beaches are almost endless, and range from busy beaches like Glenelg & Henley Beach, to the secluded and out of the way beaches of the south coast.  Adelaide's beaches are about a 20 minute car journey west from the City.
